By the year 2022, we envision driving a change in Calgary’s construction practices that sees at least 80% diversion of construction and demolition waste from landfills. In addition, we aim to reduce the nearly 600,000 tonnes of national landfill waste that Statistics Canada (2017) attributes to construction and its related activities. We are proposing policy recommendations to the City of Calgary which restructures the city’s C&D waste disposal and recycling policy in order to reduce the overall landfill volume, and thus protect the environmental future of Calgary.
